HERALD DESIGN FORUM 2022

The Herald Design Forum has evolved into a knowledge platform that serves as a conduit connecting the insights of the world's design gurus and an inexhaustible source of inspiration to those who believe in the power of creative design. Over the past 12 years, more than 100 of the world's design masters have taken the stage, and more than 10,000 visitors have watched, heard, and felt the Herald Design Forum. As we contemplate how design can remain attuned to the ever-changing tides of time, we continuously strive to share our challenges, interpretation and vision with all the participants of the Herald Design Forum. 

For humans, space has always been a three-dimensional concept. Designers have created spaces and products that we can see, touch, and feel on the planet we breathe and live on. Countless industrial and architectural designers have contributed to the advancement of spaces. But in 2022, more than two decades into the 21st century, our concept of space has evolved even further, going beyond three dimensions, into virtual spaces. We will explore the future of design with insights from some of the world's leading design gurus who are designing for the planet we live on, and up and coming master designers who are designing for virtual spaces.

Title: Design Universe: Beyond the Space

Tadao Ando

Tadao Ando is a world-renowned Japanese architect. He was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1995 and the International Union of Architects Gold Medal (UIA Gold Medal) in 2005. His architecture is characterized by its harmony with nature. His buildings, like his signature piece titled Church of Light, are in intimate union with nature, with water, light, wind, trees, and sky.

Urban Think Tank: Implementing urban acupuncture

Urban-A: Transforming the Impossible

Architect, urban designer, and professor Alfredo Brillembourg is the founder of Urban-Think Tank Group, with offices in New York, São Paulo, Oslo, and Cape Town. He has more than 30 years of experience working on architecture and urban design projects around the world. After winning the Ralph Erskine Prize in 2010, the South American Gold Holcim Prize in 2011, and the Global Silver Holcim Prize in 2012, he was awarded the Golden Lion at the 13th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition for his project 'Torre David, a huge horizon' in 2012.  Torre David is a 45-story, unfinished skyscraper in the heart of the Venezuelan capital Caracas that was once a squatter colony where people who lost their homes after the financial crisis moved in.  Urban-Think Tank was one of the first organizations to create a decent living space for them, in accordance with the Venezuelan government's policy of prioritizing the rights of residents. Prof. Brillembourg was Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Design at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich from 2010 to 2019. He is the author of ‘Torre David’.

Ida Lien is an urban economist and co-founder of Urban-A. With experience in the United Nations and the private sector, she specializes in urban crisis response, economic recovery, and urban systems research and policy work. She has worked closely with various governments and organizations to develop and implement sustainable urban projects through an interdisciplinary approach.

Vincent Callebaut

«FERTILE CITIES» Facing the challenges of the 21st century

Vincent Callebaut is an eco-friendly architect who promotes a green eco-lifestyle and a new circular economy. His eco-friendly projects include plus energy buildings, vertical forests, decontamination towers and boats, floating cities and marine buildings, and vertical food farms. The European Center for Architecture and Design and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design named Vincent Callebaut the ‘2021 Green Practitioner of the Year’. Green Planet Architects named Vincent Callebaut Architects one of the TOP 50 most ecological architects. Time magazine cited the firm as a top eco-friendly, forward-thinking architectural firm that "imagines fantastic projects that respond to the world's environmental challenges and social ills." The firm is known for incorporating the characteristics of living organisms into its architecture and designing buildings with future generations in mind.

Il Hun Yoon

After graduating from Hongik University's Industrial Design Department, Il-hun Yoon worked as an exterior designer for Mercedes-Benz (2003-2013) and Bentley (2013-2016) before joining Genesis design team in 2016. He is currently the head of Genesis Design, where he oversees the interior and exterior CMF design of all production and concept vehicles.

Ian Callum

Design philosophy in a changing world of car design

Recognized as one of the world's top three automotive designers, Ian Callum began his career in automotive design at Ford Design Studio in 1979 and went on to design the Aston Martin DB7 and Aston Martin Vanquish as chief designer for racing team and engineering firm TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), before moving to Jaguar in 1999, where he worked until 2019. Today, he continues to design cars and products at CALLUM, the company he founded in 2019, and continues to work on his masterpiece, the Aston Martin Vanguard.

Sure Bak

After studying industrial design at KAIST, Sure Bak worked as a UX designer at LG Electronics, Zigzag GmbH, and Porsche headquarters in Germany before founding the startup company called MyMusicTaste. He is the author of ‘Automotive Interface Design’ (2022).

ROUND TABLE 1: UX Writing

Gino Park

Gino Park is a Director at Wirelink TX Consulting, a UX writing company, and the head of Content Lab, a corporate research center. He created a unique content analysis methodology to diagnose whether UI texts are capable of providing a smooth interaction and communication environment from the user's perspective. Recently, he has been conducting research and development for a gradually digitalizing system to make it easier for content practitioners to use UX writing.

Park Kwang Hoon

Park Kwang Hoon is currently the Head of DX Chapter Operations at Shinhan Card and an Adjunct Professor of UX Design at Konkuk University, Department of Industrial Design. He is in charge of UI/UX Planning (UX Planning/Strategy, UX Writing) at Shinhan Card and planned and produced Shinhan Card UX Writing Guidebook 1.0 and 2.0.

TaejoonPark

UX Writing? UX Tech!

Taejoon Park worked at NAVER for 12 years, first as the head of NAVER's UI development organization and then as the head of the Accessibility Project. In 2015, he started his own company with the dream of reorganizing user experience with big data, and developed Korea's only UX big data analysis tool called 'Beusable' and built a customer base comprised mainly of large enterprises. As the only Korean BSB solution provider, he is conducting overseas business through a partnership with Dentsu in Japan. 

ROUND TABLE 2: NFT

Zipcy

Zipcy, who majored in animation, is a famous illustrator who has been working steadily since 2009. Her representative works include TOUCH and the NFT series Super Normal, and she is on a quest to explore everything she can do with her drawings, including NFTs, publishing, advertising, illustrations, videos, products, lectures, and exhibitions. She has worked on posters for the movies "The Day I Died," "Deliver us from Evil," "Mulan," "Maleficent 2," and the Netflix dramas "The School Nurse Files'" and "My Name," as well as collaborations with the liquor brand "Chum-Churum," and the games "Clash of Clans" and "Tales Runner." Her work to date runs a wide gamut. 

Hae won Kim

She is the CEO of carbon trading platform called Thanks Carbon. Thanks Carbon is a climate startup that focuses on carbon sinks and connects them to companies with ESG needs, leading to carbon neutrality. Companies, local governments, and NGOs are connected through the platform, where various projects that can reduce carbon are registered. Currently, various projects are being prepared, including the creation of mangrove forests in Vietnam, forests to prevent desertification in Mongolia, support for carbon agriculture, and solar conversion projects for local children's centers.

JongRyun Lee

He served as a senior researcher at the Frontier Research and Development Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and as a researcher at government-funded research organizations under the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Based on the acquisition of the most renowned international standard security certification and intellectual property rights of blockchain core technology specialized in large-scale data, the Blockchain Technology Research Institute develops and provides services to realize transparent and reliable data security and distribution, and has expanded its business scope to Web 3.0 My Data and NFTs. In particular, it contributes to the resolution of problems in existing NFT trading platforms, such as maintaining digital original data security using free smart contracts, and develops and provides NFT Drop&Exchange services that allow buyers to start various projects without transaction costs.
